Needing a Bronchoscopy

Campbell has been seeing a pulmonologist for a while due to loud breathing (aka stridor breathing).

He originally thought it was due to laryngomalacia due to her reflux. This was fine with us because it's not dangerous and she'd eventually grow out of it. Well, she hasn't grown out of it and sometimes it's really loud (especially if she's breathing harder due to playing, laughing, etc). It's so loud other people often ask if she's congested or has asthma because it sounds like wheezing. She also snores really loudly.

He has always told us it "could" be caused by scarring or damage from being intubated. This was doubtful because she was only intubated twice- once briefly to get surfactent and once when she got an infection and had to go on the vent for 24 hours around 3 weeks old.

Well, since her reflux is 95% better and the breathing hasn't gotten any better, he's starting to think it could be from either a cyst or scarring. He wants to do a bronchoscopy. He says it's "optional" but he would advise it because if it is a cyst or scar tissue and she should get croup or something it "would not be good."

The bronchoscopy is scheduled for April 8th at 9:00 am. We would appreciate your prayers. We are a little nervous since she has to be put to sleep but it supposedly is a light anesthesia that is very safe. Hopefully she'll pass this like she did her EEG: with flying colors!

The good news is that he'll know for sure if it's the laryngomalacia or scarring/cyst immediately. If it's scarring or a cyst he is very optimistic that it can be fixed.

We'll keep you guys posted.

On a lighter note . . . . we have purchased a new camera . . . here are some outtakes from the last few days . . .

PS Don't forget to vote for t-shirt slogan and let us know if you want to order a 2009 Team Campbell March of Dimes t-shirt!

I will absolutely be praying for you! It's a common procedure for the pulmonologists and very nice for them to get down there and actually see what is going on!

Those pics are so funny and cute! I don't think she looks like Zack but there are certain expressions that are identical! How much did she weigh at the visit?
We miss you! Every baby we see on line, Zack points and says, "ca?"

Love, Aunt Ju-Ju

It's been a while since I have commented, but wanted to let you know I'll be keeping you all in my thoughts. My daughter had the same procedure about 3.5 weeks ago at the same time she had her tonsils/adenoid out - she has a history of croup, and the doctor wanted to rule out any anatomical issues that could be causing problems. Hope that all goes well for Campbell!
