Hanging In There

We just received a phone call from the hospital and things are going okay for the time being. Her oxygen in the blood is increasing (which is really good) so they are going to decrease some of the function of the ventilator which is going to encourage her to breathe a little on her own. As a matter of fact, they have the ventilator set at 35 breaths per minute so if she breathes less than 35/min, it will breathe for her. She's currently breathing above 35/min which means that she's not fully using the ventilator (another good sign).
For the first time, they asked us if they could administer a blood transfusion (giving her red blood cells). When your red blood cell count is low, it makes you tired and sleepy, so per what the nurses have told us and what Martha has read on the internet, the transfusion (18 CCs in all) should help perk her up. Did you know that Campbell (like most micro-preemies her birth size and weight) are only born with 1 to 2 oz of blood? (The average man weighing 154lbs has around 175oz of blood) So a blood transfusion is a very common and almost expected procedure.
Finally, these pictures are from her today after they put her on the ventilator.
