With Ups . . . . Comes Downs

The other night Martha and I were talking about the ups and downs of having a baby in the NICU. Everything has been going so well and we haven't really had to experience any of the downs of Campbell's time in the NICU . . . until today. Today we went at 2pm and I was able to change her diaper and feed her and she did great during her 2pm assessment. But she never really settled down after that assessment. During our hour there, she had several apnea periods where her breathing slowed to less than 10 per minute. Shortly following an apnea period she would have what is called a brady (brady-tachycardia) in which the heart automatically slows down to compensate for the lack of oxygen. She's had a few of these short apnea/brady-tachycardia periods (lasting less than 10 seconds) over the past few days. The first one that we saw was last night at the end of me holding her and then again today at 2pm after her assessment. The doctors and nurses say this is typical "preemie" issues. It's a result of her premature lungs. We know this "apnea" phase is common with all newborns, but watching her going through this, knowing there is nothing we can do about it, is hard, especially after 8 great days!
However, she's still looking good and is feisty as ever. It's amazing to see such a personality come out of a 2lb little girl. We'll write more (or maybe Campbell will) later on tonight. Thanks so much for taking an interest in her and keeping her, and us, in your thoughts and prayers.

Continuing prayers for all three of you. Even with ups and downs, parenting is SOO worth it. At one week old she is already giving you glimpses of her fiesty spirit and the many more ups and downs you have to look forward to as a family. We all miss you at school.

Martha, Robbie and Campbell:
Ya'll are amazing! We are so proud of how well each and every one of you are doing. Life is amazing with a feisty daughter! Just wait until Campbell starts beating everyone up! You are a wonderful family.
Martha and Robbie - I think it was destiny that Campbell is your little girl. I really cannot think of two more supportive people to take care of her.

We love you!

Robbie, thank you so much for keeping all of us updated on little Campbell. I can hardly wait each day to see how she is doing. I pray so often for her and I hope that she continues to improve. Julia talks about her all the time and we hope that you and Martha are getting plenty of rest. We love all of you.
